Dear All

Tracing my family tree has directed me to your beautiful village.  My Great,
Great, Great Granddad was George Tipping (Born 1817, Upholland) who lived at
Mill House, 28 Bentley Lane, Mawdesley, from 1861 to 1871.  From 1871 to
1881 he lived at 34 Ridley Lane, Mawdesley.  He is registered as working as a
Cord Wainer, his wife was called Ellen (Born 1821, Wrightington).  He had
five children at that time, Alice (Born 1847), James (Born 1849), Elizabeth
(Born 1853), Margaret (Born 1860) and Mary (Born 1871).  Margaret and Mary
were born in Mawdesley.

I would love to hear from any relatives still living in the area, or for any
information regarding the family.

Kindest regards

Dr. Margaret Linley

Dear webmaster

Great website!.........I wonder if you could help us with something?  My 2nd cousin (Jonathon Hopper) and I have links to the Ainscough family from Mawdesley dating back to 1650.  We are trying to open up debate / discussion about Mawdesley village and the historic Ainscough family via Wikipedia.  Jonathon has made a start at this link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainscough

I have also opened up the discussion about why it is thought that Thomas More is related to the Ainscough family, in the hope that somebody can provide us with clear evidence.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ainscough

The idea with Wikipedia is that the information can be added to and challenged, and the person writing the information hopes for this to happen until the real facts emerge.

There is an interesting page on Wikipedia about Ormskirk today with links to useful websites:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ormskirk

And it would be great to have a similar page about Mawdesley which we could then link to Ainscough.........however, I know very little about Mawdesley other than what's on your website and the internet.  So, I was wondering if this is something you might like to do- put Mawdesley as it stands today on the map so to speak!
You could also list all of your other links on this page so helping to promote Mawdesley to a much wider audience.

If either Jonathon or I can be of any help please do get in touch.  If you have some content that could be useful but dont have the time to put onto Wikipedia again we  are able to offer assistance. Or if you know of somebody else that might like to get involved please forward this email to them and cc to myself and Jonathon.

best wishes

I hope you can help me,

I am researching my family history & have a relative who was born in Mawdesley in abut 1796.  Can you tell me when the church was built & what date weddings/baptisms commenced please ?

Her name was Elizabeth & she married John Collier sometime before 1816.
I'm afraid I haven't much more to go on.

(There IS a possible marriage at St Wilfred's Standish in 1818, when John Collier married Elizabeth Mawdesley.)

I have Elizabeth Collier in the census record of 1841, living at Scholes, Wigan, with her husband John Collier, a labourer (he was age 50 - 55) .  She is recorded as being age 45, which could mean she was any age between 45 & 50, as the ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 in that year.

The other people in the household are:
*Ellen Collier (she could be a sister, daughter, or daughter in law) no relationships are recorded, she is age 25 - 30.
Jane age 15 - she is their daughter, I found her baptism at St Wilfred's Standish in 1825.
Susan age 13, also baptised at St Wilf's
Twins Ann & William age 6, baptised St Wilfs.
Also Elizabeth age 1.  I'm discounting her as a daughter, she might be a grandchild.

I have Elizabeth in the 1851 census record.  She is a widow age 64 (which would mean she was born around 1787) living with the twins in Wigan.  It is in that record where her place of birth is recorded as Mawdesley.

*I was wondering if Ellen was their daughter. There is no record of her baptism at St Wilfred's, so I thought the family may have moved there after she was born.  I wondered if Elizabeth might have been married in the place of her birth (Mawdesley) and maybe Ellen was baptised there.  If that was the case, then the marriage would have probably been before she was baptised, of course this is pure speculation !

(There is also a possible baptism for Ellen Collier 1818 in Leigh, at a Methodist chapel, parents John & Elizabeth, but there are 4 siblings in the same "batch" on the LDS website, so I'm discounting her.)

The Collier name is so common in the area !

PLEASE don't go to a lot of trouble on my behalf.  I didn't know when baptisms & marriages began in the church at Mawdesley, obviously if it was after 1816 there was no point pursuing this line of enquiry !  I KNOW John & Elizabeth were married at the time of their daughter Jane's baptism, in 1825, but John & Elizabeth would have been 35 by then, so I would expect older siblings.

Of course Ellen could have been from a previous relationship.  I have checked to see if there's a baptism for Ellen Collier about 1818 at St Wilfred's, but there are none.  I checked to see if there were any Ellen's baptised around the right time with a mother Elizabeth (or Betty) with any surname, but there were none at St Wilfred's, of course she could have been baptised elsewhere.

So you see, I haven't really got anything that might help you.

Several months ago I  contacted you  asking if you had any information on relatives of mine who resided in Mawdesley- your replied that you were looking into it, but I never heard anything further.  I hate to bother you but I am anxious to find descendants of Alice Thompson and Anne Welch sisters of my mother Jane Lindsay. I know they are long deceased but I know they had large families and I am interested in locating any of these cousins., Any help will be much appreciated.

Margaret Gow

Thank you.
