Hello,
I am researching my family tree & it appears that there are links to Mawdesley, Parbold & Wrightington that go back many generations.
My Gt  GT Grandfather was Richard Orrell born about 1828, married to Mary Cobham born about 1832.Richard was at one time landlord of  the Red Lion Inn. Their daughter Alice married James Parr & they had seven children, one of whom was my paternal Grandmother. The family move to Bootle in Linacre about 1896 but I understand that their eldest son James, born 26/06/1881,returned to Mawdesley & became a basket maker living in High Street & Blue Stone Lane. I would if possible like to contact decedents of James.
Mawdesley & Parbold were held in great affection by my Father & his two brothers & they often came to visit Jay Bank & Herbert Edgar, married to Mary Slater, & Bill Barnes the blacksmith at Bilston, both distant relatives, staying for much of the school holidays with their grandmother Alice in a cottage opposite the Parish Church.
Alice remarried after the death of James, returning to Mawdesley as Alice Haydock.
It has been interesting to read Alan Cobham's 'Around about Mawdesley' on your web site. I can remember my uncle talking about this book. We have recently been to Parr Hall Farm, thanks to the kindness of Kate Motley, as we think that we have a direct link to him & are trying to verify this.
I hope that I have not taken up too much of your time with this. It has been really exciting finding all the links as I can remember visiting the area as a child with my Father.
your sincerely Margaret Johnson (nee) Yates.

I need to make an amendment to my original mail before you put it on the web site, if that is possible. In the 6th paragraph I refer to visiting Parr Hall Farm but omitted to say that it is Edward Parr born 1647 (c) that we have links to. I would appreciate it if you could make this amendment & hope that it would not cause too much trouble. Thanking you in anticipation, yours sincerely,

I am seeking information about my G/G Grandparents, Thomas Cobham and Jane Marsden.   Thomas was a basket weaver and married Jane approximately 1814.  Jane was buried at the Roman Catholic Church, Mawdesley,  in 1888, I do not know where Thomas was buried.  I believe Thomas' parents were:- Thomas Cobham and Isabella Spybic (Spybie) and both are buried at Mawdesley.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the family.

Thanking you,

Alice Foster.

I have a family history request:  I am trying to find an Ellen born about 1780/81 who marries James Baxendale.  She is widowed in the 1830s and goes to live in Croston/Lathom where she brings up a family called Arnold to whom she states in the 1841 and 1851 census that she is an aunt. In the same census' she gives her birthplace as Mawdesley. Her surname before marriage might have been Arnold or Bolton.  I realise this is vague but hope it may ring some bells.

Thank you for your help.  Pat Williams

Hi

We are trying to research our family tree and would welcome any information on ancestors of John Thomas and Jane Southworth (nee Iddon) ~ married 16 June 1904.  We do have some dates of births, marriages and deaths but would welcome further information.  Please email us at ajsjss@hotmail.com

Many thanks

Sheila Balden (nee Southworth) & Mandy Stephens
daughter and grand daughter of Ralph Southworth, niece and great niece of Clara Dickinson

I have just learned that my ancestors on my
mother's side hail from Mawdesley, two families in particular, the
ANDERTON family and the ECCLES family with many of the born in the
village. The closest relative born in the village was my grand-mother
Matilda ECCLES who was born in 1909, she sadly died in 1942 leaving
her husband to struggle with seven small children. She married an
Irish lad Edward McCOURT who I have had great difficulty in tracing.
If there are any of Matilda's family still in the area I would love
to hear from them. I am intrigued as to how he met Matilda...

The ECCLEs are related to the ANDERTONs by marriage and I understand
one of my forebears (William ANDERTON) had a farm of 48 acres  in
Sid Brook Lane in the late 18th/early 19th century. Any relation to
John ANDERTON your artist?
